The Volkswagen Type 3

The Type 3 was introduced by Volkswagen in 1961. The classic air cooled Type 3 includes three styles: the VW Squareback, the VW Fastback and the VW Notchback. Volkswagen America did not begin importing the VW Type 3 until 1966 in VW Squareback and VW Fastback versions. The VW Notchback Type 3 was not imported to VW dealers.

Many restoration parts for the VW Type 3 are in common with the VW Type 1 (Beetle) and you will see such Type 3 parts listed. However many Type 3 parts are unique especially sheet metal and upholstery. As an example, the VW Type 3 emergency brake and its parts were used in Ghias and Beetles as well as in the Type 3. Much Type 3 clutch hardware is also in common with the Beetles, Ghias and also Buses.
